NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Open competition) 2026 @ CUNY, Graduate Center

Registration for NACLO, Open Round (January 29) is now open

NACLO Round 1 at CUNY  Graduate Center:

  • Location:
    • CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave, New York, NY 10016
  • Time of the test:
    • 10am – 1pm
  • Meeting time and place:
    • 9:40am, CUNY Graduate Center entrance, next to the Security booth
  • What to bring:
    • Black ink pen
    • Water bottle (if you need one)
    • Small snacks may be brought if needed, but you must be considerate of others. Nut-based snacks, noisy wrappers, and strong-smelling food are not permitted.
    • ID to enter the CUNY building (a school ID or library card should suffice)

NACLO Linguistics Circle at CUNY: Meeting dates, topics, locations TBA

  • Meeting 1: Monday, November 24, 6:15pm – 7:30pm. Via Zoom (link will be emailed to everyone who registered via the Google Form or registered at the CUNY Grad Center NACLO site)
    • Topic: What is NACLO, types of problems (format, difficulty, linguistic topics), walk-through, and discussion of several NACLO problems from previous years.
  • Meeting 2: Monday, January 5 6, 6:00pm – 7:30pm. Via Zoom (link will be emailed to everyone who registered via the Google Form or registered at the CUNY Grad Center NACLO site)
    • Topic: problems dealing with ‘non-linguistic’ topics such as number systems, computational problems, etc.
  • Meeting 3: Monday, January 26, 6:00pm – 7:30pm. Via Zoom (link will be emailed to everyone who registered via the Google Form or registered at the CUNY Grad Center NACLO site)
    • Topic: general strategies towards solving NACLO puzzles.

What is NACLO?

  • NACLO is a contest in which high-school students solve linguistic problems.
    • NACLO is geared towards high-school students interested in solving puzzles, breaking codes, learning foreign languages, natural language processing, and language technologies.
  • In solving NACLO problems, students learn about the diversity and consistency of language, while exercising logic skills.
  • No prior knowledge of linguistics or second languages is necessary.
  • No entrance fee to join the competition.
