NACLO Linguistics Circle at CUNY:

  1. November 4, 5:45pm-7:00pm, CUNY Graduate Center, room 7406. Discussion topic: What Makes a Language Difficult? Understanding Language Complexity through NACLO problems?
  2. December 2, 5:45pm-7:00pm, zoom. Discussion topic: Time, Location, and Numbers through NACLO problems.
  3. January 6, 5:45pm-7:00pm. Discussion Topic: Language Families through NACLO problems
  4. January 20, 5:45pm-7:00pm. Discussion Topic: NACLO Problem Solving Strategies, different problem types, etc.

What is NACLO?

  • NACLO is a contest in which high-school students solve linguistic problems.
    • NACLO is geared towards high-school students interested in solving puzzles, breaking codes, learning foreign languages, natural language processing, and language technologies.
  • In solving NACLO problems, students learn about the diversity and consistency of language, while exercising logic skills.
  • No prior knowledge of linguistics or second languages is necessary.
  • No entrance fee to join the competition.

When and where?

  • Open round competition:
    • Thursday, January 23, 2024, 10am – 1pm (EST)
    • CUNY runs two sites where high school students can write the NACLO test:
      • Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016;
      • Queens College.
